Our Origins

Larry Fluer founded HMEx (The Hazardous Materials Expert) in 1989 to assist building and fire officials, building owners, and designers manage facilities containing hazardous materials. The HMEx Assistant was released in 1993 as an offshoot database that provided an easy way to look up properties and hazards of materials based on the International Fire and Building Code. Although Larry has retired and is no longer actively involved in the HMEx Assistant, our new leadership is just as committed to providing a reliable application that code users can turn to for help classifying and managing hazardous materials.

Today, HMEx is web-based and enhanced to include features that automate chemical classification and evaluate chemical inventory quantities to comply with the International Fire and Building Code.
